A land with a worthy name
Where on earth can you find a nation named after the precious jewels you find in it? “Cuscatlán”, the land of precious jewels, is the name the native pre-colonial inhabitants of El Salvador gave to the region that later became our motherland. Although the land and the inhabitants have changed through the centuries, I believe it is still a land of many jewels. But, what is a jewel? Local or visitor, it only takes a closer look at the everyday life, listen to stories of childhood or just stick around to experience some of the magnificent but simple displays of Salvadorian jewels. The culture jewels.
As a Latin American nation, our own national identity is embedded within the big umbrella of the Latin American culture, and it can be hard sometimes to find traits that are unique to us Salvadorians. However, the longer one lives as an ex-pat, and the more fellow Latin Americans one gets to know along the way, those traits become more evident.
Thus, after some effort and dedication, I was able to “harvest” some of the most precious jewels of the culture of El Salvador. This list of jewels can be found in my last collaboration with CAPSLOCK magazine of 2019. Click here to see it.
